Culture

“It’s conservatives who are best placed to meet the challenges of these times … We don’t believe ourselves to be morally superior to our grandparents.”

Tony AbbottThe former PM opines on the virtues of conservatism. For this particular audience, respecting the lessons of history probably does mean rejecting grandpa’s moral compass.

Progress

“Women are sufficiently assertive now … we should be giving some thought to whether we need to protect men’s involvement.”

Alan StockdaleThe octogenarian Liberal executive suggests to the New South Wales Liberal Women’s Council that the party might consider quotas for men. He’s invited to these things because it’s always funny to see a garden gnome in a suit.

Disasters

“I didn’t know the US had a hurricane season.”

David RichardsonThe acting head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency comments in a speech announcing there will be no new disaster response plan this year. That swirling hot air is indistinguishable on Capitol Hill.

Principles

“I respect when people understand what their own values are.”

Larissa WatersThe Greens leader offers her opinion on the defection of Dorinda Cox from her party to Labor. That is admirable diplomacy, in the week following the government’s decision to approve the North West Shelf project.

Education

“I am Agatha Christie.”

AI Agatha ChristieA digitally enhanced actor appears as the late crime novelist to teach a BBC Maestro series writing course. Because what’s lacking in literature today is racism.

Crime

“Trust is a fragile thing…”

Marion ScrymgourThe member for Lingiari calls for the Australian Federal Police to handle the criminal investigation into the killing of 24-year-old Warlpiri man Kumanjayi White. His passing coincides with the inquest into the death in custody of teenager Kumanjayi Walker.
